Former provenance researcher Nora Calloway comes to Harrowgate, Maine, to settle her great-aunt's estate and sell The Afterthought Bookshop. Then a box of discarded library books appears, filled with notes from Ruth Patton, a librarian who died after hiding something she was never meant to see. Days before Nora arrives, another woman uncovers the same secret and leaves a frantic voicemail for the unopened shop. By morning, she is dead.
